English Language Day Observed at Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd

Under the aegis of SGHGU Hari Trust and with the support and encouragement of the College Principal Dr. Satinder Kaur, the Postgraduate Department of English at Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd celebrated English Language Day. Thiscelebration was a part of the college’s grand commemoration of 75 Years of Excellence in Women’s Education and Empowerment.English Language Day is celebrated every year on April 23 to mark the birth and death anniversary of William Shakespeare, the greatest dramatist in the English language. The event began with a floral welcome of Principal Dr. Satinder Kaur by the students and senior faculty members. Adding an academic dimension to the event, Ms. Bhavika Singla (MA-II English) delivered an insightful speech on the life and literary legacy of William Shakespeare.As a tribute to the richness of English literature, students of the department staged Shakespeare’s play ‘King Lear’, capturing themes of pride, deception, justice and human suffering through the story of the aging king and his daughters—Goneril, Regan and Cordelia.The student’s powerful performances and expressive dialogue brought Shakespeare’s vision to life. The play clearly showed important lessons about choosing relationships wisely, avoiding fake praise and the power of being humble and honest.The play was prepared under the direction and supervision of Prof. Javid Ahmed Hajam and Prof. Suman Gautam. Technical assistance was provided by Dr. Inderjit Kaur.In the spirit of this occasion, the PG Department of English in collaboration with the Literary Society, had organized a series of competitions in the preceding days, including Group Discussion, Quiz Competition and Calligraphy to foster student engagement with language and literature.Prizes were awarded to the winners of these events.Jashandeep Kaur (B.Com I) won the 1st Prize in the Calligraphy Competition, Navroz Jhanji (B.A.B.Ed II) secured the 2nd Prize and Manjinder Kaur (B.A.B.Ed II) claimed the 3rd Prize. Consolation Prizes were awarded to Taranpreet Kaur (BCA II) and Manmehak (BA II). The competition was judged by Vice Principal Dr. Navdip Kaur and Dr. Ramanpreet Kaur.Principal Dr. Satinder Kaurin her address appreciated the creativity and hard work of the students and faculty. She emphasized the importance of language in shaping identity, building bridges across cultures and preserving literary heritage. The stage was gracefully conducted by Prof. Rupa Kaur Rai.The celebration concluded with a warm vote of thanks by Dr. Gagandeep Dharni, Head of the Department of English who sincerely acknowledged the collective efforts of students, participants and faculty members for making the event a resounding success.
